Current Issue

Appellate Court Denies Appeal of Coastal Insurance Increases, but the fight is not over.

Current Issue A state appeals court ruled Tuesday it can't reverse homeowners' insurance premiums that soared by up to nearly 30 percent along the coast because state law doesn't allow a challenge to the former insurance commissioner's last-minute deal. A three-judge Court of Appeals panel ruled in a lawsuit by coastal communities trying to overturn a December 2008 deal between former Insurance Commissioner Jim Long and the N.C. Rate Bureau, which represents insurers. Their settlement on homeowners' rates, which came within weeks of Long ending his 24-year run as the state's top insurance regulator, also allowed homeowners in 32 western counties to cut their premiums.

Upcoming Events

On Wednesday June 16th, Coastal Carolina Tomorrow will host Phil Leazer, Chief Administrator and Project Manager for York County South Carolina's Pennies for Progress Program. For those not familiar, the program (which insures that 99 cents of every $1 raised remains in the county that generates the revenue), is administered to provide the citizens with safer and more efficient local roadways. Approved by voter referendums in 1997 & 2003, the program will expire in 2011 after completing 40 projects selected and overseen with citizen input, unless voters decide to extend the effort. For more information on the meeting please contact Melanie Cook.

About CCT

Just in case you are not aware there are three (3) at-large positions open on the New Hanover County Planning Board. As you are all well aware by now, the process of providing a more balanced, fiscally sound environment for our development community begins with our elected officials and continues with those who volunteer their time and professional expertise to work with organizations like CCT, and serve on public boards and committees at the state and local levels. For those not familiar, the planning board focuses primarily on land use planning, zoning and growth management issues. The Current Vacancies link of the county’s web page contains a list of the functions, duties and responsibilities of the board, so check it out and if you believe you possess the requisite qualifications the time to act is now. The deadline for application submittals is Monday June 28thMelanie Cook.
